Eleven of the international most significant Graffiti artists - Herbert Baglione (BR), Mirko Reisser (Daim) (DE), Os Gemeos (BR), Daniel Man (GB), Pius Portmann (CH), Stohead (DE), Tasek (DE), Tilt (FR), Miss Van (FR), Heiko Zahlmann (DE) und Zevs (FR) - will present their work, some of which is produced directly in the gallery.
All artists will be present for the opening reception. In 1975, Jean Baudrillard spoke of Graffiti as "the revolt of signs" - a medium used by artists to comment on the post-industrial state of people in capital cities.
Therefor the sprayers use their individual language to adapt to the urban landscape and exploit its potential for their artistic interference. Taking an international cross section of the different positions over the last 15 years proves, how individualistic and refined their picture language is, but most of all, how deeply they influence our daily perception. Wakin up Nights joins eleven of the most influential graffiti artists. Their tags and pieces not only mark their local environment, but more and more invade the international art scene.

This exhibition makes clear that Graffiti or Street Art is no longer a subculture, but a highly sensitive and direct reaction on local and global concerns that are often socio-critical. The artists enter a dialog with conventional urban signs, twisting their meaning often into a political artistic statement. Very characteristic of Graffiti art is the latent and subtle impact from the close connection between the work and its environment. For this reason, the show will also comprise works that are realised on site and thus can take a stand on the given context.
Pius Portmann, Stohead and Mirko Reisser (Daim) show the virtuous and pictorial qualitiy of some Graffiti language. Herbert Baglione, the twins Os Gemeos and Daniel Man demonstrate, how cultural identities are an influential part of their work. More minimal in its approach, reflecting on the source of Graffiti art, is the work of Heiko Zahlmann whereas Zevs works with a more conceptual method to reflect on our consumer society. Tilt combines his Graffiti with Photography, often using the cliché of the female as a sex symbol. Also concerned with the image of the female is the artist Miss Van with her unmistakable portraits.
That graffiti artists are not confined to their genre, but manipulate it perkily, becomes evident in the contribution of Tasek.
This exhibition was developed in collaboration with Rik Reinking, a devoted collector of Street Art who has realised many versatile projects in this field, and who is a tremendously competent consultant.
